An on-duty police officer suffered facial injuries in Dunedin on Sunday night after a woman allegedly threw boiling water at her.

A police spokesperson told Newshub the officer had been attending a family harm incident in the Pine Hill area at the time of the attack.

"While in attendance an officer received facial injuries and was taken to hospital," the spokesperson said.

One person, a 50-year-old woman, was taken into custody and will appear in the Dunedin District Court on Monday, charged with wounding with intent.

It's understood the officer is currently taking leave to recover from the attack.
