Pictures reveal full extent of flooding as 'red alert' rainfalls resumes

Canterbury residents are battling another day of heavy floods and drastic weather conditions as many work up to a state of emergency on Monday morning.

Civil Defence has ordered residents of the low-lying areas of the Pines Beach community, east of Kaiapoi, to evacuate their homes.

The Canterbury region is facing its most significant rainfall in 10 years, with MetService declaring a rare 'red alert' heavy rain warning which will remain in place until at least 7pm Monday.
