A man wanted in relation to a firearms incident at the Sofitel Hotel in Auckland last month has been arrested by police.

The man, believed to be Hone Reihana, was arrested on Thursday afternoon by Armed Offenders Squad members executing a search warrant at a rural property near Kerikeri.

Police say the man, 27, is in custody and is receiving medical treatment for a minor injury sustained during the arrest after initially resisting police.

He will be appearing in the Kaikohe District Court on Friday on charges relating to discharging a firearm with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and unlawfully possessing firearms.

Police say further charges are likely and four other people have been arrested in relation to the investigation to locate this individual.

Enquiries are ongoing and further arrests are expected, police said.

Arrest warrants for Reihana were issued on April 23 after he was identified as the 'person of interest' in the shooting at the Sofitel on Auckland's Viaduct Harbour.

The Armed Offenders Squad was called to the Sofitel on the waterfront just after 9am on April 15 following reports a firearm had been discharged. No one was injured in the incident.

It later emerged the shooting was related to a flurry of violence between members of the Head Hunters and Mongols gangs.

Police investigating the incident last month said Reihana, a patched member of the Head Hunters, was wanted in relation to firearms and other offences.

Detective Inspector John Sutton says Thursday's arrest is the result of tireless work by staff across Tāmaki Makaurau and Northland.

"We know the shooting incident in the Auckland CBD caused alarm and concern in our community and Police have had a dedicated team working hard to locate the alleged offender responsible," he said.

"Gun violence has no place in our society and will not be tolerated."
