Police are calling for a tall bearded man who intervened in a Whangārei assault last week to come forward.

Early on Tuesday, April 27, a man got out of a car and attacked another person, leaving them with serious facial injuries and injuries to the ribs, police said.

The suspect tried to make off with the victim's cellphone, which was later recovered.

A 21-year-old man has been charged with multiple offences including robbery, injuring with intent to injure and dangerous driving.

But it's a local hero the police are after now.

"Police understand a witness has recorded the assault on their phone and the footage showed a man who intervened," they said in a statement.

"Police would like to identify and speak to this person who intervened, who is described aged between 20-30 years, of tall build with a beard, black shorts and work boots, and a black Fila bucket hat."

This man - or anyone else with footage of the attack, or who saw it - should get in touch, police say. Call 105 and quote file number 210427/3460.
