Traffic diversions have been lifted after an apartment building fire at Auckland's Onehunga mall.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) crews were called to the area just before 8pm on Saturday and arrived to find a building well-involved in flames.

A FENZ spokesperson says the blaze was contained an hour later and as of 4am on Sunday, all crews had left the scene.

Witness Jed Mozessohn told Stuff it was the largest fire he'd seen for some time, describing it as "huge".

At the fire's peak, FENZ had crews from Onehunga, Ellerslie, Mount Roskill, Auckland Central, Remuera, Avondale, Balmoral, Otahuhu, Mangere, Papatoetoe, Otara, and Parnell at the scene.

FENZ said road closures and diversions that were in place were lifted earlier on Sunday morning.
