Auckland man dies in hospital after being found unresponsive in police custody, investigation launched

An investigation is underway following the death of an Auckland man who was found unresponsive while in police custody.

Supt Karyn Malthus, the Auckland City District Commander, said the man had been treated at Auckland Hospital on Saturday for unspecified reasons and was later discharged.

Upon his release, the man was arrested at the hospital shortly before 6pm and taken to the Auckland Custody Unit, Malthus said.

Just after midnight, the man was found unresponsive. An ambulance was called and officers provided first aid, including CPR.

The man died in hospital a short time later, Malthus said. His family have been notified and are being provided support.

"We are working with health officials as part of the investigation into the man's death," Malthus said.

"The matter has been reported to the Coroner, WorkSafe and the Independent Police Conduct Authority."
