Police have sent the drug believed to have caused three people to need urgent medical care in Auckland CBD away for testing.

The incident, which occurred on Monday morning, saw the trio rushed to hospital in a critical condition after they allegedly ingested a substance on Federal St, outside SkyCity.

A police spokesperson told Newshub a substance seized on Monday has now been sent to the Institute of Environmental Science and Research (ESR) for testing.

They said the three people are recovering in Auckland City Hospital.

On Monday, police said initial indications suggested the three people had "suffered a medical event after taking an unknown substance".

Emergency services rushed to Federal St just after 8:30am on Monday. St John said a rapid response team and an operations manager were also sent to the scene.

A witness told the New Zealand Herald he believed the trio had consumed synthetics.

"They just passed out. It wasn't good."

The police investigation is ongoing.
