A narrow stretch of highway in Wellington has confused motorists, who couldn't figure out where cyclists were supposed to ride.
A post on local Facebook group Vic Deals brought the issue to the fore, with several people saying they often found themselves slowing down to accommodate cyclists, despite an apparent cycle path to the left-hand side of State Highway 2 which stretches between Upper Hutt and Wellington.
A Waka Kotahi spokesperson told Newshub there is a shared footpath beside the highway, but it is quite narrow.
"Some cyclists use it and others do not."
They confirmed cyclists are not required by law to use the path and can ride on the highway if they wish to - but this can be problematic.
They say the road is narrow and has no shoulder, which makes it hard for motorists to safely pass cyclists.
Regardless of where they chose to ride, all cyclists must ride responsibly which includes staying as close as practicable to the left side of the road.
The road code says this should mean cyclists are keeping left as much as possible - but not so much that it impacts their safety.
Construction towards a safe walking and cycling route between Wellington and Lower Hutt has begun, with the Petone to Melling section currently being worked on.
The Ngauranga to Petone section is expected to start construction later in 2021.
