Two people injured in a supermarket stabbing in Dunedin last month say they are slowly getting better but memories of the incident continue to haunt them.

Four people, including two supermarket employees and a Corrections staff member, were hospitalised after the stabbing at Cumberland St Countdown. A 42-year-old man was subsequently charged with four counts of attempted murder.

In a joint statement on Monday two of the stabbing victims, Vanessa Andrews and Jorge Fuenzalida, expressed thanks to those who had helped them following the attack.

"What happened that day in Countdown is still very much on our minds," they said.

"We try to help people where we can, and that day we heard people in distress.

"During the process we both got badly injured."

Andrews and Fuenzalida said because the case remained before the courts they were "unable to give any more details of this tragic event, except to say this event has changed our lives forever".

"We still have a long way to recover, but we are getting there one day at a time; with some good days and some not so good days.

"We would like to take this opportunity to express our thanks to all the people who were involved in our rescue at Countdown Supermarket recently; from the staff at Countdown Supermarket, to the police, St John Ambulance, and the doctors, nurses, physio and all other staff at Dunedin Hospital," they said.

They also thanked the Otago Corrections Facility and NZ Customs.

After the incident took place, Countdown said the supermarket had received an "outpouring of aroha and support" from across the country for those injured.
