Kiwis around the country might need to make indoor plans this weekend as both islands are set to be hit with heavy rain.

Weather Watch says a large Tasman Sea low will trap moisture-rich, sub-tropical air bringing heavy rain to both the North and South Island.

In the north Whangarei, Northland and Auckland are all set for wet weekends along with Hamilton.

The Bay of Plenty will be particularly wet with rainfall potentially exceeding 100mm in some areas.

Weather Watch said most areas can expect the rain to last for long periods of time.

Hawke's Bay is also set for rain with between 30 to 40mm expected to fall over the weekend.

Weather Watch said the rain will come as good news for the "very dry" area.

Wellington is also set for rain throughout the weekend and into early next week.

The South Island will also get a dousing with the first rain event in Canterbury since the flooding in Ashburton in late May.

But Weather Watch says the rain will be considerably lighter and focused further north.

"This rain event has considerably lower rainfall totals and the risk zone is further north in North Canterbury and eastern Marlborough," Weather Watch says.

Eastern Marlborough may see slips and localised flooding.

Further south the rain grows lighter with Wanaka and Invercargill spared.
