Homicide investigation launched by police after 'disorder incident' leads to death in Whangārei

A homicide investigation has been launched following a "disorder incident" in Whangārei late on Saturday night that led to the death of one person. 

The individual suffered critical injuries in the incident on Bank St, Detective Inspector Dene Begbie, the Northland district manager of criminal investigations, said on Sunday morning. They died a short time later in hospital.

"Police are speaking to two people in relation to this incident and an investigation is underway," Det Insp Begbie said. "We are speaking to witnesses and conducting a scene examination today."

The scene remains cordoned off, including the lower part of Bank St, most of Vine St and the bus depot on Rose St. 

Authorities are appealing for witnesses to come forward. Police are aware several people recorded parts of the incident, Det Insp Begbie added.

"Anyone who was in the area at the time and may have seen anything that could assist is asked to get in touch. In particular, police are aware that a number of people recorded parts of this incident and would like to speak to these people and review their footage."
