Jay Lingman has been sentenced to life in prison for murdering Auckland man Denver Chance.

Chance went missing in February 2019 and after a two-week police search, his body was found at an Auckland property.

At a trial earlier this year, Lingman was found guilty of murdering the man by shooting him in the head multiple times, before using a chainsaw to cut the body to fit it into a freezer.

On Friday, Lingman was sentenced to life in prison, with a minimum non-parole period of 15 years and two months.

While Lingman denied murdering Chance, he earlier pleaded guilty to one charge of possessing cocaine for supply, one of possessing MDMA for supply, and another of possessing a Class C drug for sale.

The defence's argument was that both men were drug dealers and Lingman was acting in self-defence after being threatened by Chance. The Crown rejected this.
