A man has been hospitalised with severe head injuries after a serious assault overnight in the town of Richmond, about 30km southwest of Nelson.
Local police are appealing for information from the public regarding the assault, which took place at Sundial Square, near the entrance to Richmond Mall, shortly before 1am on Sunday.
The man suffered "serious head injuries" in the incident and was taken to hospital by ambulance, a police spokesperson told Newshub.
Anyone who may have witnessed the assault, or has any information which may assist authorities with their investigation, is asked to contact police by calling 105 and quoting file number 210613/2942.
