A police officer has been assaulted after responding to a fight in Auckland.

Emergency services were called Karangahape Rd about 3:30am to reports several people were fighting.

A police statement said while police were dealing with the fight, an unrelated man approached an officer from behind and attacked him, causing him to fall over.

"The officer was hospitalised suffering a serious concussion and remains in hospital in a stable condition."

A 31-year-old man has been charged, police said.

"The behaviour displayed by this man is unacceptable," said the statement.

"He was arrested at the scene and will face charges in the Auckland District Court on Monday."

Police thanked members of the public and security officers who assisted at the scene.
