Police are seeking more information after a group fight in central Wellington early on Saturday morning left a man hospitalised.

At around 2:10am police were called to reports of a group fighting in a New World carpark off Wakefield Street.

Officers arrested four people for fighting and disorderly behaviour.

A fifth man was taken to Wellington Hospital by ambulance where he required surgery. He remains in a serious but stable condition.

No one has been charged at this stage however an investigation is underway.

"Police want to hear from anyone who might have witnessed this incident, or who has information that can help our enquiries," says Detective Senior Sergeant Tim Leitch.

"Officers would especially like to hear from anyone who may have filmed or photographed the assault, as they may have important evidence of the incident."
