Police are searching for a "dangerous" Head Hunters gang member in connection to the Sofitel Hotel shooting in Auckland in April.

The Armed Offenders Squad was called to the Sofitel on the waterfront just after 9am on April 15, following reports a firearm had been discharged - though no one was injured.

It later emerged the shooting was related to a flurry of violence between members of the Head Hunters and Mongols gangs.

There is a warrant to arrest 37-year-old Fred Tanuvasa and police are urging anyone with information on where he is to come forward.

"Tanuvasa, 37, is a Head Hunters gang member and is considered dangerous," they say.

"He should not be approached. If you see him, phone 111 immediately."

Tanuvasa is 190cm tall and has a large build. He also has links across Auckland.

"Anyone with information about the whereabouts of Fred Tanuvasa is asked to contact Police on 105, quoting file number 210415/6346," police say.

"You can also contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
