A serious collision in Puhoi has blocked a stretch of State Highway 1 in Auckland's north, with motorists warned to "expect significant delays".
Emergency services and police are at the scene of the crash, which occurred shortly before 10am on Thursday.
In an update on Thursday afternoon, a police spokesperson confirmed one person - the sole occupant of one of the three vehicles involved in the crash - had died.
Two other people were taken to hospital in a moderate condition.
It's expected the section of SH1 between Puhoi and Warkworth will "be closed for some time" while emergency services are at the scene, the spokesperson said.
"Motorists are advised to expect significant delays and avoid the area if possible."
As of 12:45pm, diversions at Woodcocks Rd and Puhoi Rd remain in place.
