Thousands report feeling 3.9-magnitude earthquake near Christchurch

Thousands of people have reported feeling a 3.9-magnitude earthquake in Canterbury.

GeoNet says the moderate quake struck 5km southwest of Christchurch about 1:50pm on Wednesday, at a depth of 7km.

"Hope everyone who felt this is doing OK. It has been a rough few days for Canterbury," Civil Defence said in response to the quake.

As of 1:55pm, 8500 people had reported feeling the quake. Twelve reported its strength as extreme, 225 as strong and nearly 2500 as moderate.

"Only 3.9? Felt bigger!" one person said on Twitter.

"That seemed way stronger," another wrote.

"We are all outside," said another. "That was intense!"
