Two people have died after a car and a motorcycle collided in Manakau, south of Levin, early on Wednesday morning.

The crash occurred on State Highway 1 between Whakahoro Road and Kuku East Road at about 5:35am in the township, which sits on the boundary of the Manawatū-Whanganui and Wellington regions.

A police spokesperson confirmed the fatalities in a statement shortly after 8am.

"Two people have died following a crash at Manakau early this morning," they said. "The motorcycle rider and pillion passenger died at the scene."

SH1, which connects Manakau to both Levin and Otaki, was closed following the collision and remains out-of-action while authorities are at the scene.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area or delay their journeys as no detour is available.

"Police are working to reopen it as soon as possible," the spokesperson continued.

The Serious Crash Unit has launched an investigation.
