The owner of a frail ginger cat who hangs around the local supermarket is distraught after reports someone took him home.

Angus, a celebrity cat who hangs around Countdown Upper Hutt, was allegedly taken by a stranger in a silver van.

The owner, Karen Piper, says he was last seen at around 9pm on Thursday.

"Someone messaged me and said they saw someone pick him up and put him in a silver van," she told Newshub.

"I'm sure it was well-intentioned. They may have thought he was a stray."

Angus is a frail 14-year-old feline with skin allergies, so Piper is urging others not to feed him.

"It's a big worry because he is old."

"It would be appreciated if you could bring him back."
