Weather: Civil Defence warns drivers to take extreme care as severe weather strikes

Auckland Civil Defence and Emergency Management is cautioning people driving in and out of the region to drive with extreme care.

It follows a strong wind and heavy rain watch for Auckland from Albany northwards from Sunday night issued by MetService.

Meteorologist Andrew James says a complex front is hanging about across the country.

"The system brings periods of rain with heavy falls, strong winds and the chance of thunderstorms," MetService says on Facebook.

"Conditions are likely to be particularly adverse over the upper North Island where locations popular with tourists such as Northland and Coromandel could be affected."

MetService says gales and heavy rain could bring localised flooding and damaging winds. There's a strong wind warning in place for Northland, with strong northeast winds with gusts of 120km.

Anyone travelling is urged to take great care - especially in Northland and Coromandel.

Meanwhile, NIWA warns the wind gusts and rain could cause scattered power cuts. There's also the increased risk of "coastal impacts", especially at high tide, as "big wind = big waves".

"The risk for beach erosion is elevated for eastern parts of the North Island, particularly for the Coromandel, due to persistent onshore winds pushing large waves onshore," it says.
