Armed police have swarmed a bar-and-grill in the Coromandel town of Thames after the business was targeted in an aggravated robbery early on Monday morning.

A police spokesperson told Newshub the offender had broken into the Grahamstown Bar & Diner on Pollen St shortly before 8am.

"Armed staff have responded as a precaution, but not the Armed Offenders Squad," the spokesperson said.

No one was injured in the robbery.

"Police are continuing area enquiries to locate the offender and determine if anything was taken."

According to the Ministry of Justice, aggravated robbery either involves grievous bodily harm, two or more thieves working together, or a robbery where the offender was armed with a weapon.

A police spokesperson told Newshub later on Monday that initial enquiries had established nothing was taken from the diner.

"We continue to investigate and make enquiries to locate the alleged offender."
