A Brazilian schoolgirl has died after she pierced her own eyebrow.

Izabela Eduarda de Sousa, 15, pierced her brow at home with the help of a friend after her family told her they wouldn't allow her to get the piercing done professionally.

Three days later, the teenager's face began to swell, as the infection spread.

She was rushed to hospital and suffered four cardiac arrests.

A week later, she was put on a ventilator but died shortly afterwards.

Her aunt Jurciene de Souza said the young girl had wanted the piercing for a long time.

She urged other teenagers to listen to their parents if they were told they couldn't get a piercing and not to attempt it at home.

"This is a plea from an aunt who has lost a very beautiful, very special niece," she is quoted as saying by news.com.au

"Obey your parents, your aunts and uncles, and your grandparents."
