A car was set alight and shots fired in south Auckland early on Friday morning amid ongoing tensions between the King Cobras and Rebels gangs.

Police were called to an address in Favona Road around 12:37am after someone reported hearing gunshots.

Counties Manukau detective inspector Chris Barry told Newshub police found several items of interest at the scene including an empty shotgun cartridge.

Barry said shortly after the shots were fired a car was set alight on Raglan Road in Māngere. No one was injured in either incident and a scheme examination is underway.

Barry said police don't think the incidents are random, instead saying they are linked to ongoing gang tensions.

"[Police] are investigating the possibility they are linked to the recent ongoing tensions between the King Cobras and Rebels gangs.

"We thank our community for quickly reporting hearing gunshots and acknowledge this would have been very frightening for them."

Barry said there will be an increased police presence in the area today.
