The Defence Force has evacuated a Nelson childcare centre and a building in Whakatū Marae in order to search a local heritage building for explosive material.

The Nelson City Council says the Defence Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit is searching the Founders Heritage Park's collection of historical items for picric acid - a volatile substance used in early medical supplies, that can also be used as a military explosive.

It is sensitive to heat, friction and shock so will therefore need to be removed from the suite and safely disposed of, if it is found.

Members of the public are asked to steer clear of Founders Heritage Park in Atawhai Drive while the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit assesses the material.

Police are on-site and working closely with EOD to ensure the operation is managed safely.
