Man who drove road roller at boy racers pleads guilty to drunk driving and reckless disregard

The man who drove a road roller at a group of boy racers in Upper Hutt has pleaded guilty.

Patrick Roil, 47, who owns Roil Contracting, is charged with reckless disregard of people and property and driving under the influence of alcohol.

His son Marcus is also pleading guilty, as both men were involved in the incident that left two people injured and about five cars damaged.

The incident occured in July 2019.

Witnesses to the chaos told Newshub it was "like a terror attack".

"He was hitting cars and would hit into people," said one man at the gathering.

Another man suffered a broken leg in the rampage.

Dylan Wilson was hit by a fleeing car, shattering his leg in four places.

Doctors told him he was lucky not to lose his limb.

"It was traumatising, seeing him in agony, just crying and in pain and wanting it to stop but it can't," witness Bryan Seddon told Newshub.

The Roil’s will be sentenced next month in Wellington.
