Massive fire breaks out at east Auckland plastics factory

Firefighters are tackling a large blaze which has engulfed a plastics factory in east Auckland.

The fire broke out in Tru Design Plastics on Ti Rakau Dr, Burswood just before 5pm.

Witnesses have told Newshub the "chaotic" blaze spread rapidly - overwhelming the two storey building.

Footage from the scene shows the first floor of the building collapsed.

A worker at the nearby Mobil service station said the flames are "huge" and there's black smoke filling the air.

Richard McFadden, the sales manager at nearby Botany Honda Motorcycles, said he could see flames billowing out of the building's windows.

He said fire engines are continuously screaming down the street.

"It seems like a pretty serious kind of fire," he told Newshub. "We're literally about 100 metres away from it.

"There's flames just pouring out of two of the windows on the upper floor - and a lot of thick black smoke."

A large cordon is in place at the scene. Police said Ti Rakau Dr is closed between Gossamer  and Trugood Drs .

"Motorists are asked to avoid the area as there is significant congestion," a police statement said.
