Person found dead after house fire in Christchurch, death being treated as 'unexplained'

A person has been found dead after emergency services were called to a house fire in Christchurch.

Fire and Emergency say they were called to the Silvester St, Woolston home shortly before midday on Thursday after reports of smoke coming from the property. After crews arrived, the fire had burnt itself out.

It's currently unknown when the fire started or what damage it has caused.

A police spokesperson says they are working to determine the circumstances of the person's death.

The death is currently being treated as "unexplained" and a post-mortem is expected to take place on Friday.

The death will be referred to the Coroner.
