Video appears to shows moment of attempted carjacking on Auckland motorway

Video footage appears to show the moment a man tried to steal a car on Auckland's Southern Motorway.

Police on Saturday took a man into custody after he allegedly stole a vehicle in Kumeu and then tried to steal another car from a member of the public at the Khyber Pass off-ramp in central Auckland.

A witness told Newshub she saw the alleged offender "swerving across the motorway...crashing into the side of the motorway and clipping various cars".

"I witnessed him run from his grey van and forcefully attempt to remove the lady from the red car," the witness said.

Police said no members of the public were injured in the incident.

A spokesperson said the man initially fled police after an officer located a vehicle linked to a wanted man, just before 10am on Saturday. Shortly after the vehicle was found, the man was also located at an address in Kumeu. He then fled on foot before stealing a vehicle from a nearby property.

Police monitored him from the Eagle helicopter while the man drove through west Auckland towards central Auckland.

"The vehicle came to a stop on the Khyber Pass off-ramp, where the offender attempted to steal a vehicle from a member of the public," the spokesperson said.

"Police officers were quickly on the scene and took the offender into custody with the assistance of a second member of the public."
