Waiheke protest: Police arrest three protesters at Pūtiki Bay amid marina dispute

Three protesters have been arrested at Waiheke Island's Pūtiki Bay on Thursday amid ongoing protests over a controversial marina.

The protests at Kennedy Point, which have been going on for 129 days, are an attempt to stop the construction of the 186-berth marina.

Protect Pūtiki says the marina endangers a nearby kororā (little blue penguin) colony but the developer rejects those claims.

The protesters were arrested while occupying a floating pontoon inside the construction zone.

A video on Protect Pūtiki's Facebook page shows a large group of officers arriving on the island.

The officers can be seen dragging kayaks and small boats across the beach before heading towards the pontoon.

As the police near the pontoon, one protester can be heard asking, "What's the plan for today, officers?"

A few minutes later an officer with a megaphone tells them they are trespassing and need to leave. A police boat then pulls up to the pontoon and officers disembark and arrest the protesters.

Police inspector Gary Davey told Newshub three people were arrested and removed from the site.

"Police are currently deployed to Kennedy Point / Pūtiki Bay on Waiheke Island. There have been ongoing issues between developers and protesters at the site for an extended period of time.

"Earlier this morning, Police arrested and removed three people that were trespassing on a pontoon inside the construction zone.

"Police remain present at the site and we are monitoring the situation. Our focus is on ensuring the safety of all parties, from protesters present, to construction workers and the wider public.

"Police recognise the public's right to protest peacefully and lawfully."

It comes after tension ramped up between protesters and security guards for the development. In a video released last week, a protester appears to be kicked in the face by a security guard. In another video, security guards can be seen wrestling protestors on the pontoon before a protester appears to kick out at a security guard who falls in the water.
