Watch: Police warn of alarming new crime trend in Auckland targeting motorists

Police are warning of a terrifying new crime spree in Auckland where thieves are jumping into cars and snatching motorists' bags.

The offenders block the target from reversing out of their car park before they open the door of the target's car and grab their handbag.

"These have particularly been occuring in the Papatoetoe and Botany areas," Sgt Nicolas Jensen from Counties Manukau East police said.

"The investigation is still ongoing. We'd like to reassure the community that we take these matters very seriously."

Jensen said the offenders have been using stolen vehicles to get around and commit the crimes. They are also using stolen credit cards to obtain items for themselves.

"If you do find yourself in one of these situations, keep yourself safe, don't chase the offender and call 111. Get a good description of the offender and let us deal with it."

Police have released a video of some bag snatch incidents and are urging anyone who recognises the offenders to call 105 and quote file number 210502/1803.

Jensen also offered some tips on how to stay safe including:

  • Don't carry heaps of cash
  • When you get in your car, lock your doors.
  • Put your handbag under your front seat.
