About 4000 people in the Wellington region are currently without power due to a "network outage".

According to Wellington Electricity, staff are working to restore power to the stricken suburbs as quickly as possible.

The local power company first became aware of the outage shortly before 1pm on Tuesday, according to its website. It's hoped power will be restored by 4pm.

The outage is primarily affecting Lower Hutt, including the suburbs of Alicetown, Avalon, Belmont, Boulcott, Epuni, Fairfield, Harbour View, Hutt Central, Melling, Naenae, Normandale, Petone, Taita, Tirohanga and Woburn.

"We have approximately 4000 affected customers and expect to restore power in 95 minutes."

In an alert on its website, Wellington Electricity offered its apologies to businesses and residences impacted by the outage.

"Our apologies to Lower Hutt businesses and residents who are currently without power. Wellington Electricity is working with Transpower to identify and resolve the issue," it said.

"Please contact or visit your health professional or emergency services if you require urgent medical support."

Up-to-date information will be provided on Transpower's Facebook page and website, and on Wellington Electricity.

A local area outage is also affecting roughly 60 residents on Westmeath St in Waitangirua, a suburb of Porirua City approximately 22km north of Wellington.

An emergency shutdown is underway, Wellington Electricity says.

"We are working to restore power as quickly as possible."
