Christchurch Airbnb stabbing: Youth charged with murder over death of Zion Purukamu

A youth has been arrested and charged with murder following the fatal stabbing of a teenager at a Christchurch Airbnb last week.

Zion Purukamu, 16, was killed and two others hospitalised after a stabbing at the rental property on Medbury Tce in Fendalton at about 10:30pm on Friday.

The youth has also been charged with two counts of wounding.

They are scheduled to appear in the Christchurch Youth Court on Tuesday.

It comes after around 80 young people attended a party at the three-bedroom house rented by two people for the night. Police on Saturday said alcohol was involved before the tragedy unfolded.

The Purukamu family have been told of the arrest, police say, having earlier on Monday thanked members of the public who had responded to their pleas for more information.

"Operation Medbury remains an active investigation and police still want to speak to people who were at the party when the incident occurred," a police spokesperson added on Monday night.

"Anyone with information that could assist our investigation or anyone who is yet to come forward is asked to contact police on 105 and reference Operation Medbury.

"As this matter is now before the courts, police will not be making any further comment."

Medbury Tce resident Margaret Harper on Saturday told Newshub the incident had shaken up a normally quiet street.

"I went out into the street to be met with the terrible commotion, lots of police running across the street and I was told to go back inside.

"People in the street were all texting each other, all very concerned about each other,  it was only later I found out it had been a stabbing at a party at an Airbnb in the street.

"We don't know the people personally but we feel so sorry for the families of the victims.

"We are shocked and saddened, we are an extremely quiet street with only this one house on the corner rented out as an Airbnb and we live very quiet lives so it is a real shock to have this kind of thing happen," Harper told Newshub.

Sue Harrison, the director of the property management company looking after the Christchurch home, says she was "cheated" by whoever made the booking via Airbnb.

"The person who booked the house told us one thing and did another… we have strict procedures around parties because they cause a lot of rubbish and noise and we never want to see them happen.

"This one sneaked through and goodness knows what those kids were doing… we're angry and hurt."
