Coronavirus: No new community cases of COVID-19, one at the border

The Ministry of Health on Friday reported no new cases of COVID-19 in the community and one in managed isolation.

It's the 166th day in a row New Zealand has gone without a case in the community, despite the growing threat of the highly contagious Delta variant. Just one case that couldn't be traced back to the border could trigger a full lockdown, experts and officials have said.

The case found in managed isolation was a contact of a previously known case, in an Auckland facility.

The ministry reported no new historical cases or recoveries, leaving the number of active cases presently in New Zealand at 44.

The total number of confirmed cases since the pandemic began, including those at the border, is now 2558, 740 of them since the start of 2021.

There have been 2,548,634 tests carried out to date, 6060 of them on Thursday. In the 24 hours to midday Thursday there were 612,614 scans of QR codes using the COVID Tracer app.

There have now been 57 doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine administered for every 100 Kiwis. Just over 21 percent of all Kiwis 16 or over have had two doses.

The ministry said there have now been more than 2.39 million doses delivered - 1.51 million first doses and 882,756 second. Thursday saw another 48,612 doses - a new record. About two-thirds were first doses.

All the workers who went aboard a vessel with COVID-19 on board have had at least one negative test, the ministry said. Testing of wastewater in Tauranga and Mt Maunganui collected on August 9 and 10 has found no trace of the virus. Testing of water from August 11 is underway.
