COVID-19 infectious traveller transferred from MIQ to Auckland City Hospital

A recent returnee who is a confirmed case of COVID-19 has been hospitalised in Auckland.

The Ministry of Health confirmed on Friday afternoon the person had returned a positive test after arriving in New Zealand.

The returnee has now been transferred from the Jet Park Hotel quarantine facility to Auckland City Hospital.

"This person is in a stable condition on a dedicated COVID-19 ward," a Ministry of Health spokesperson said.

"Strict infection prevention and control protocols were followed during the transfer of this person and there is extremely low risk to the New Zealand public.

"We can confirm the person is hospital due to complications associated with COVID-19.The patient’s whole genomic sequence information will be provided when available."

The spokesperson said hospitals are "experienced and well equipped" to manage COVID-19 patients.

"There are appropriate isolation and infection prevention and control plans in place at all the metro-Auckland DHB hospitals to accommodate these patients - our hospitals remain safe for patients, visitors and staff."

It comes a week after another COVID-positive returnee was transferred to hospital from Auckland's quarantine facility.
