COVID-19: Kai Kaha sign has Kiwis laughing at 'Eat Strong' misspelling

An awkward spelling mistake on a motorway alert sign has Kiwis laughing after it accidentally told them to "eat strong".

The sign on the Royal Rd overbridge was meant to comfort people last night as the nation was plunged back into a level 4 lockdown.

"Kai kaha NZ," it read. "Stay home be kind."

Unfortunately, as the letters were switched, the message took on a humorous tone. 'Kai' in Māori means 'food' or 'eat', whereas 'kia kaha' means 'stay strong'.

The mishap was spotted and photographed by a viewer who posted the image to a west Auckland community page.

"How do you get the job of deciding what goes on these motorway signs? Food strong NZ," they wrote.

"That explains all the people lined up in all the fast-food drive-thru last night," one person remarked.

"Yep, definitely going to be feeling food strong after eating zero takeaways for the next few days," another quipped.
