More than 5000 people in the Wellington region were rudely awakened in the early hours of Thursday after a quake hit near the capital.

The magnitude 4.6 earthquake struck 30km west of Paraparaumu at a shallow depth of 33km. It hit just before 4am.

Almost 6000 people from Wellington all the way to Mt Taranaki reported feeling the shaking -with most describing it as "light".

It's the second quake to shake Wellington this week after a 5.1 magnitude earthquake hit southeast of Tokoroa in the early hours of  Monday.
