Police have arrested a 40-year-old man in connection with nearly 80 offences across Wellington.

The man was arrested in Levin after a search warrant was carried out. He's thought to have targeted Wilson Car Park buildings in the capital and stolen items from vehicles, including tools, backpacks and electronics.

Police also allege he stole number plates to assist him in petrol drive-offs. He's been charged with 56 offences and will appear in court on Friday.

Police say the amount of property they have recovered is significant and they are trying to return it to its rightful owners - some of whom could be overseas by now.

Anyone who recognises any of the stolen property is urged to contact police.
