A Napier Boys' High School student is in a critical condition after being hit by a train on Thursday morning.

The teenager, who was on a bike, sustained critical injuries after he was hit at the railway crossing on Ellison St at 8:30am. He remains in Hawke's Bay Hospital.

Napier Boys' High School headmaster Jarred Williams says the school is supporting the student's family.

"Our thoughts are with the family during this difficult time, and we will continue to support them in any way we can," he said in a statement to Newshub.

"Support from the school counselling team and the Ministry of Education’s Emergency Team is in place for those who may need assistance."

An investigation into how the crash occurred is ongoing and Williams says the school is assisting police with their inquiries.
