Police appeal for help after Auckland crash kills man, police staffer fighting for his life

Police are pleading for more information following a fatal crash on Auckland's North Shore that killed a man and seriously injured a police staffer.

Emergency services were called just after 10am on Monday morning to the collision, which occurred on Upper Harbour Highway near the Tauhinu Rd off-ramp in Greenhithe.

"An initial scene examination indicates that the stationary speed camera van was parked off to the side of the highway and away from live traffic lanes, in accordance with police policy," said Detective Inspector Aaron Proctor of the Waitemata CIB.

"The van has been hit from behind by a grey Subaru Forester, which has veered off the highway and crashed into the parked van. The driver of this Subaru vehicle, a 58-year-old man, has died at the scene."

The 72-year-old police staffer inside the speed camera van was rushed to hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.

Police are investigating the crash on behalf of the Coroner and WorkSafe has also been advised.

Det Insp Proctor says police are wanting to hear from anyone who witnessed the crash or saw the grey Subaru Forester travelling eastbound on Upper Harbour Highway at around 10am on Monday.

"Anyone with information is asked to contact Police by phoning 105, quoting file number 210830/1504."

For now, police are providing support to the family of the deceased and the family and colleagues of injured staff member at what they've described as "a very difficult time".

On Monday Police Commissioner Andrew Coster said the incident was "incredibly distressing" for the wider police family.
