Police name teen killed in Christchurch Airbnb stabbing as Zion Purukamu

Police have released the name of the teen killed in the Christchurch Airbnb stabbing on Friday night - he was 16-year-old Zion Purukamu, of Hoon Hay.

"Police extend our sympathies to his whānau and we are providing them with support alongside Victim Support," said Detective Inspector Scott Anderson.

Purukamu was killed at a property on Medbury Terrace in Fendalton at about 10:30pm after dozens of teenagers gathered at a property rented via Airbnb.

Whoever was responsible for his death is yet to be arrested.

Det Insp Anderson told a media stand-up on Saturday around 80 young people had attended the party in the three-bedroom house, where alcohol was involved.

After police were called to the house they found three people with serious injuries. Purukamu later died while the two others - aged 17 and 14 - remain in hospital, both in a serious but stable condition.

Resident Margaret Harper told Newshub the killing has shaken up the normally quiet street.

"I went out into the street to be met with the terrible commotion, lots of police running across the street and I was told to go back inside," she said.

"People in the street were all texting each other, all very concerned about each other, it was only later I found out it had been a stabbing at a party at an Airbnb in the street."

A post-mortem has been completed but the scene examination on Medbury Terrace is ongoing, police say.

"Officers continue to carry out a number of enquiries to establish the circumstances of this incident, including identifying and speaking to those in the area at the time," Det Insp Anderson says.

"We thank neighbouring residents for their continued cooperation and understanding as officers carry out the important work of collecting evidence and canvassing for witnesses and information."

He adds police are "determined to locate the person or people responsible for this senseless incident" and asks anyone with information or CCTV footage that can help to get in touch.

"We have received a number of calls from members of the public so far and we thank everyone who has come forward with information, which is invaluable to this investigation.

"Information can be provided to police on 105 quoting event number P047534409, or anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111."
