Auckland City police are searching for a man who allegedly attacked two young women in Auckland CBD apartment buildings and tried to take their shoes.

Constable Nick Hunter said the incident occurred on Wednesday, June 2 when the women were attacked in separate incidents.

"At about 5:45pm the victim was walking up Wakefield Street towards an apartment building, unaware that a male was following her," he said.

"Once she got into the apartment building she swiped in and the male tailgated her in."

Hunter said the man took the same elevator as the woman, got off at the same floor and then followed her down the hallway where he attacked her.

"They walked down a hallway before she was violently tackled to the ground."

Hunter said the man tried to rip off her shoe and escape but was confronted by her neighbours and he returned the shoe and left the building.

Only minutes later, a second attack occurred on nearby Airedale St where a second woman was followed into an apartment building.

A man attacked her from behind and stole her shoe.

Hunter said police were "confident" they were dealing with the same suspect in both incidents.

"Everything we need to know about this guy is caught on camera."

He was wearing a blue hoodie, blue jeans, black sneakers and a medical face mask. He was believed to be in his late 20s or 30s.
