Serious crash between bus, car in Auckland's north, section of East Coast Rd closed

A person has died after a serious crash between a bus and a vehicle in Auckland's north early on Wednesday morning.

Emergency services remain at the scene of the collision, which occurred on East Coast Rd in Redvale shortly after 7am.

A Fire and Emergency spokesperson told Newshub a vehicle had gone off the road and two trucks were helping to retrieve it.

In an update shortly before 8:30am, police confirmed one person, the sole occupant of the vehicle, has died.

"Sadly one person and the only occupant of the vehicle has died at the scene," they said.

"It's understood there were no passengers on the bus at the time, and the driver was not injured."

In a tweet, Auckland Transport (AT) confirmed a section of East Coast Rd - between Awanohi Rd and Rodeo Dr - has been closed and is likely to remain blocked off to motorists for some time.

"Due to a serious crash a section of East Coast Rd (between Awanohi Rd and Rodeo Dr) is now closed between Northcross and Silverdale and is likely to remain closed for some time this morning," AT said.

"Please use an alternative route."

The police spokesperson added that the road is expected to remain closed "for some time".

"Motorists are advised to expect significant delays."

Diversions are being put in place on Lonely Track Rd and Awanohi Rd and motorists are encouraged to take an alternative route.

The Serious Crash Unit is also in attendance.

A further update will be provided when it becomes available.
