Christchurch police haven't yet made any arrests in the fatal Christchurch Airbnb stabbing and have appealed to the public for more information.

A 16-year-old boy died after being stabbed at a party at an Airbnb that had been rented by two people for the night.

Two other people aged 17 and 14 are in hospital after the attack in Medbury Tce in Fendalton at about 10:30pm on Friday.

When police arrived they found three people with serious injuries.

The teenager later died while the other two are stable in hospital, they are believed to be from the wider Christchurch area.

Det Insp Scott Scott Anderson told a media stand-up no arrests had been made in the homicide investigation and police were still examining the scene.

Anderson said around 80 young people attended the party in the three bedroom house and alcohol was involved.

He said a post mortem was being carried out on the deceased victim, while the other two were in a serious but stable condition. The victim's names had not been released to give the family time to break the news of the tragedy to relatives.

"A homicide investigation, including a scene examination, is underway to determine what occurred and who is responsible," said Det Insp Michael Ford in a police statement on Saturday morning.

"We are aware there were a large number of people on Medbury Tce during the course of the evening.

"We are appealing to anyone who was in the area at the time, and can assist with our inquiries, to come forward and speak to us."

The incident happened at a party, with dozens of teenagers descending on a property rented on Airbnb. One witness said he heard people say the boy was stabbed.

Resident Margaret Harper told Newshub it has shaken up the normally quiet street

"I went out into the street to be met with the terrible commotion, lots of police running across the street and I was told to go back inside.

"People in the street were all texting each other, all very concerned about each other,  it was only later I found out it had been a stabbing at a party at an Airbnb in the street.

"We don't know the people personally but we feel so sorry for the families of the victims.

"We are shocked and saddened, we are an extremely quiet street with only this one house on the corner rented out as an Airbnb and we live very quiet lives so it is a real shock to have this kind of thing happen," Harper told Newshub.

Susan Harrison, a director of Christchurch Holiday Homes who manage the property told Stuff they were "gutted and it was thier worst nightmare."

"We are extremely strict about parties. No one wants a party in their house. No one wants to clean up the mess. No one wants this to happen, that's why it's so upsetting that it got sneaked through," Harrison told Stuff
