Three youths are in police custody after a person boarded a Western Line train in Auckland on Monday afternoon carrying an imitation firearm.

A spokesperson for police said they received a report at around 4pm that a person was seen with a firearm in the Morningside area.

"Enquiries have established that [the] person got onto a train heading west. As a precaution, police briefly stopped trains heading in both directions and we have searched those trains."

Police inquiries indicated the person got off the train in Avondale.

They said no threats were made against anyone nor was the firearm presented.

In a further update, police advised three people have been located and taken into custody.

"The firearm is an imitation firearm. The three people are all youth and will likely be dealt with via Youth Aid."

An Auckland Transport spokesperson confirmed the Western line was closed for about 20 minutes and reopened at 4:38pm.

"Services are now operating as normal."
