Wellington City Council is warning the organisers of an illegal rave they could face fines if they don't pick up after themselves.

Photos posted to Facebook group Vic Deals on Sunday morning showed Tarakena Bay littered with empty cans, bottles, and boxes of alcohol after attendees of the illegally held rave drank the night away.

One of the organisers of the event, who declined to be named, told Newshub they did clean up on the night of the party after packing up their speakers and gear - but people they didn't know stuck around and continued to drink.

They intended to return on Sunday and clean up - but when they did there was no mess there.

"I thought we were in the clear."

However, what had happened was another local person had seen the carnage left behind and cleaned it up.

They claim to have spoken to the local who cleaned up after them- and as amends, the organisers went round other Wellington beaches and cleaned them.

But the council says even though this mess has been removed if the organisers don't clean up their act there could be further consequences.

"The organisers host these events at undisclosed public locations...and we will remind the organisers they require a permit to host an event on public land."

A council spokesperson told Newshub this ensures regulations around liquor licensing, noise control, security and waste management are met.

"We have an educational approach to illegal dumping where warning letters are sent, the offender's name is put on a register then if the illegal dumping continues we will move onto fines."
