Women's Refuge offers once-in-a-lifetime opportunities in exchange for 'Safe Night' donation

Women's Refuge is offering New Zealand a slew of once-in-a-lifetime opportunities - including mini-golf with the country's most beloved public servant Ashley Bloomfield.

From Friday, anyone who gifts the charity a "safe night" - a $20 donation which ensures women in trouble get a bed, food, and childcare for a night - will be in to win one of 11 extraordinary experiences.

It's being dubbed the Safe-night-a-thon, and winners will get one of a myriad of experiences.

These range from listening as pop star Benee sings you happy birthday, to recording a voicemail with Joanna Lumley, all the way through to Dr Ashley Bloomfield playing minigolf with you - and everything in between.

Miranda Harcourt, the face of the Safe Night initiative, says the campaign has been a wild success since its launch in 2020.

"We’ve been blown away by support for the campaign so far and can’t wait to see how much we can raise during the Safe-Night-a-thon.”

The chief executive of Women's Refuge Dr Ang Jury says the generosity of New Zealanders has made a massive difference to the lives of vulnerable women and children.

"Across the country, each and every night, scores of women and children go off to sleep in one of our refuges – close to 50,000 bed nights over the past year. This support from generous Kiwis allows us to keep them safe, warm and

protected from further harm.”

New Zealand's rates of domestic violence are among the highest in the world, with about half of all homicides committed by a family member.

Police are called to a family violence incident every three minutes - even though some estimate just a quarter of incidents are ever reported.

Harcourt says the $20 donation can be life-changing.

"It’s so easy to gift someone a Safe Night, someone who you may never meet, but whom you will help at a time they need it most."

The campaign launches on Friday, and will run until August 15. To buy a Safe Night, follow this link.
