An Auckland police officer is recovering at home after being injured by an "aggressive" teenager during a callout in Mt Wellington.

Police were called to reports of a family harm incident at the property shortly before 2am, said Inspector Jim Wilson, Area Commander for Auckland City East Police.

"As police were speaking to those involved, a man was behaving aggressively and attempted to punch an attending officer through a glass door - with the glass shattering and cutting the officer's face," he explained.

"The officer was treated by ambulance at the scene. They are now recovering at home and are being fully supported by police and their colleagues."

The offender cut his hand during the ordeal and was taken to hospital for treatment.

A 19-year-old man has been charged with injuries with intent to injure, and is scheduled to appear in the Auckland District Court on Tuesday.

"Police staff go to work every day to help keep people and our communities safe, and violence of any sort towards our staff who are only trying to help is unacceptable," says Insp Wilson.
