Body found in Port Hills confirmed to be missing Christchurch woman Shirley Warrington

A body found in the Port Hills near Christchurch on Monday morning was that of 85-year-old Shirley Warrington, who was missing for nearly two months.

Det Snr Sgt Damon Wells says her death isn't being treated as suspicious.

"This has been an extremely difficult time for our family and we are relieved our mother has now been found," Warrington's family said in a statement.

Shirley had last been seen in Rolleston, south of Christchurch on July 10. The physical police search was suspended on July 14, but her family continued looking - desperate to get her home.

Her disappearance struck a chord - leading to random members of the public drawing maps, making spreadsheets and a Facebook page to share information.

"We want to once again express our thanks and gratitude to all of the people who spent hours helping search for her," the family said.

"The concern and care you showed for both Shirley, and our family, will always be greatly appreciated."

Wells also thanked those who assisted in the search for Warrington.

Officers would continue to investigate her death on behalf of the coroner, he said.
