Have your say: Should people wear masks while running?

The rules around masks are back in the spotlight as most of New Zealand shifts down to alert level 2, which has new face covering requirements.

As of 11:59pm on Tuesday, all of New Zealand outside of Auckland will be at level 2, allowing for more movement and social gatherings. But the Government is now requiring face coverings to be worn at many indoor locations, like retail businesses and public buildings.

The Prime Minister answered questions on Tuesday morning about the need for masks at gyms and swimming pool facilities, but some have also asked whether people running outside - likely heavily breathing - should also need to mask up.

"I know they aren't compulsory during exercise outside, but when I am on my daily walk, I have runners passing me very closely huffing and puffing and breathing down my neck," one The AM Show viewer said on Tuesday.

"Damn annoying as they seem to be oblivious of anyone else wearing masks on their walks."

Host Ryan Bridge said runners need to give a wide berth to others outside, while sports newsreader Mark Richardson said he was changing his behaviour while out running to ensure he can physically distance.

But do you think people should wear masks while running?
